China has made another great leap forward. In just 4 months they have eradicated food safety and product safety problems. The program was an astounding success according to Pu Changcheng, vice minister of the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
During this 4 month campaign they have registered 98,000 food processors as well as working on developing traceback systems to monitor the food. In addition they have stopped or slowed the use of non food materials, recycled food, color agents, and harmful preservatives.
It is amazing that they have been able to resolve this problem in 4 months, a problem that has persisted for century’s is all of a sudden resolved.

Okay now we have been enlightened by McDonald’s UK CEO Steve Eaterbrook that it is not the fast food junk food that is the cause of obesity in children, it is those darn video games to blame. Yes, it may be true that we get less physical activity but to blame the obesity problem on video games is a  stretch of the imagination. (see BoingBoing)

China just recently conducted a survey on food safety and environmental issues. According to the survey 60.7 percent of respondents were concerned about the safety of their food, the survey went on to indicate that the citizens of China are worried about the enviornmental impact of pollution on the food supply.
The survey “2007 Environmental Protection and People’s Livelihood Index” conducted by the China Enviornmental Culture Promotion Association, which is also affiliated with the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) had 9011 respondents from 29 provinces and autonomous regions. Please see the article from China View for complete details.
What is interesting to me is that more than 80% of the people say they are happy with the governments efforts to protect the enviornment yet they are concerned about the environmental pollution. I wonder if they are happy with the government just because it is the right thing to say about the government. Would we get the same response here in the USA?

The Zhejiang (eastern China province) government has taken action to institute an index measure the quality of the food from this province. It will be a comprehensive index that this correlated with the quality of each particular food staple and will be posted on the local governments website, according to the provinces Food and Drug Administration officials.
The authorities plan to examine different foods throughout Zhejiang province on a regular basis to make the index truely representative. The concept came to light after a four month nation wide campagin to improve qualilty of food safety that was launched last August in China.
The targeted items will be farm produce, processed food, catering sector, pork and imported andd exported foods.
At present it would be nice to get more clarity of the index and how it will be measured. Hopefully we will get more informationon the workings of the index to understand its true value. If nothing else it certainly has to be a step in the right direction for monitoring food safety.
It will be interesting to see if other provinces follow.Â

Here is a dumb dumb rule by Whole Foods – no touching of customers, please read the blog from Church of the Customer “Is A Shoplifter A Customer” and all the comments.
If we employed this rule would it mean no handshaking with customers? No slap on the backs with customers? No high fives with customers?
I wonder if our Japanese customers employ this rule, they always bow rather than shake hands?
