I just returned from my trip from China on United flight 858. As usual I had pre-ordered my Indian Vegetarian Meal. And as usual upon seating they asked and confirmed that indeed it was me that had ordered the special meal. (I like to eat lightly on long flights to help fight off jet lag.)

Dinner came, or should I say the appetizer came. SHRIMP?? Was this really my meal? I called the attendant and asked if this was indeed my special meal, she confirmed it was the correct meal and proceeded to show me the yellow index card indicating it was my special meal. Okay so this is a new type of Indian Vegetarian meal, no problem, I do eat shrimp. After finishing the appetizer the main course came, mixed vegetables, yogurt with aloe, and Chicken with curry sauce on the side. What is going on? Okay I do eat chicken so no problem.

After several hours and just before landing they have breakfast, what was I in for now? Breakfast came, a portion of spinach, hash browns, scrambled eggs, yoghurt with aloe and HOLY COW, a big fat piece of beef (Filet Mignon)!!! I don’t eat beef but no problem I could eat the rest.

Don’t they know that in India the cow is Sacred?

Is this some sort of warped idea by Chinese caterers of an Indian Vegetarian meal?

Oh well, another experience on my favorite airline, United. (Enjoy the friendly skies…)
