• How Taiyaki Came About

Taiyaki, a delightful twist on the already beloved imagawayaki, first graced Japan in 1909. This treat involves wrapping bean paste in a flour-based skin, but with a creative spin: it's shaped like a fish. The founder of Naniwaya Sōhonten, Seijirō Kobe, innovated this shape to resemble the tai, or red sea bream—a fish traditionally symbolizing luck and fortune in Japan, and a luxury only the affluent or celebratory occasions could justify. Seijirō's aim was to provide ordinary people with the joy of this high-status symbol at a fraction of the cost.

Since then, taiyaki has undergone numerous transformations in terms of fillings, batter, and even diversified into various shapes and sizes. It made its way to Korea during the Japanese colonial period, where it's known as bungeo-ppang, and post-war, spread across Asia and worldwide, capturing hearts with its sweet charm and unique form.
